The Paper
Much of Su's paper comes from a 14th century paper mill in Couze, situated on a little tributary of the Dordogne between Lalinde and Bergerac. It is hand-made and the machinery is water-powered. The heavy texture and the irregular edges are characteristic of the hand-made process. Some years ago in Tate Britain there was an exhibition devoted to the kinds of paper Turner used, and one of his sources was the paper mill in Couze. The present owner of the mill, M. du Chêne, restablished the paper production in 1972, the year after Su moved to the Dordogne.
